How to read the release

Openings are a stock

Job openings estimate positions open on the last business day of the month. Hires and separations are flows over the month.

Quits are one separation type

Total separations include quits, layoffs and discharges, and other separations. One component does not describe the entire labor market.

Different from the jobs report

JOLTS and the Employment Situation are separate BLS surveys with different samples, concepts, reference periods, and release dates.

Official source and limits

Primary source: BLS JOLTS schedule. Verify the official page before relying on a date or reference month.
