How to read the CPI release

Monthly vs. annual

The one-month change and 12-month change answer different questions. Confirm the comparison window before repeating a number.

Headline vs. core

All-items CPI includes food and energy. “Core” removes those categories; both are published measures with different uses.

Adjusted vs. unadjusted

BLS publishes seasonally adjusted monthly changes and unadjusted 12-month changes. Labels matter when comparing releases.

Official sources and limits

Primary source: BLS Schedule of Releases for the Consumer Price Index. BLS says its release calendar is updated as needed, so verify the official schedule before relying on a date. Use the BLS CPI home page for the latest release and the BLS Handbook of Methods for construction and methodology.

CPI calendar questions

When is the next CPI report?

The next scheduled U.S. CPI report is September 11, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern and covers August 2026.

Does a lower monthly CPI mean prices fell?

Not necessarily. A smaller positive change means prices rose more slowly over that month; a negative change would indicate a decline in the measured index for that comparison.

Is CPI the Federal Reserve’s inflation target?

No. The Federal Reserve states its longer-run inflation goal in terms of the annual change in the price index for personal consumption expenditures. CPI remains a widely followed BLS measure with different construction.
